Light, white and black: My four-year-old's composition

My four-year-old son's composition that he has repeated at least 25 times a day all week:

White light, black shadow
There is no black light
When it's dark, it's black
They have not switched on the light.

Turning Survival Inside Out

Humanity has been feeding itself the message that survival is hard, survival is good, survival of the fittest is best. There is also a saying that goes something like, “If you’re only ever given a hammer, then everything else will look like a nail.” When the focus of life is on survival, then everything looks like a competitive struggle.

Life itself is not trying to survive. Life begets life. Life celebrates itself in every subtlety and every overwhelm. Every aspect of life remains open and flexible, available to what might be required for its perpetuation. Even in an environment that seems to be lacking the means, somehow, life finds its way.

Words

Flashback December 27, 2020: My son was sick, the refrigerator wasn't working and I had gone to Chroma to look for an alternative. I returned home in 15 minutes to find the toddler crying hysterically and his grandparents and the cook unsuccessfully trying to pacify him. Tired, anxious and upset I had complained to my husband later in the evening, "Three people in the house and they cannot keep my son for 15 minutes!" The next morning there were only two out of the three left. My father-in-law had passed suddenly in the morning. The fridge was delivered at the time of my father-in-law's funeral. It bears a reminder how fickle human life is.

Two days back, I uttered the same words and stormed out of the house. Similar situation, different people, who couldn't keep a tantrum-throwing preschooler. It took 25 laps of power swimming (in 20 minutes, my fastest record) to calm me down. The words kept ringing in my ears. Words, that haunt me forever.
