My reading challenge 2022 is to finish 50 books that have been published/authored/set in 50 different countries. Twice a week, I shall post about the ones I have read, mention the country they are set in and where the author is based. Instead of a review, I shall open a random page in the book and quote a line/para. My reviews an ratings are available on Goodreads, for those who wish to know.
Author: Bill Bryson (USA) 🇺🇸
Genre: Non-fiction/Travel
Set in: USA 🇺🇸

In the summer of 1948, Earl V. Shaffer, a young man just out of the army, became the first person to hike the Appalachian Trail from end to end in a single summer. With no tent, and often navigating with nothing better than roadmaps, he walked for 123 days, from April to August, averaging 17 miles a day. Coincidentally, while he was hiking, the Appalachian Trailway News, the journal of the Appalachian Trail Conference, ran a long article by Myron Avery and the magazine’s editor, Jean Stephenson, explaining why an end-to-end hike was probably not possible.
