Page 70: In the end it is not possible to say with any accuracy how involved in Antoine Lavoisier's work Marie-Ann was. She was a true multihyphenate: her husband's researcher, assistant, translator and collaborator; also his illustrator and then later, Antoine's editor and publisher. She probably wouldn't have had enough of the right sort of training to make significant discoveries. One of her main jobs was translating papers by the likes of Priestly and Cavendish into French so that her husband could read them. So she was a communication aid - an amanuensis. And as one of the most intriguing and successful stories of creative collaboration shows, that this is one of the most important roles anyone can play.
